Tarantulas milked to discover new spiders medical breakthroughs

It isn't surprising that they've got the attention of the medical community now. But why was it so difficult for them to evolve some of their own abilities?

One intriguing possibility is that some of their ancestors have simply gone extinct, which would make them less appealing candidates for new genes to carry. Another possibility is that some of them were simply too stupid to do well in the world. The scientists believe that, on average, the spider species that evolved some of their skills are better off than those that did not, with the exception of the ones that have survived and grown large enough to reproduce successfully.

"Many of them didn't have enough resources to be doing something as important as evolving the ability to communicate in very diverse environments and having families — or even to care for infants," said John-Paul Peltier of University College London's Centre for Genome Biology. "To be successful, those that became good at something needed the help of multiple other species. In our case, there wasn't a family and it wasn't obvious that there were many species to offer."

So the team set to work trying to build out an evolutionary strategy — finding gene copies for each of these abilities in their genome, then seeing if those could be passed to their offspring. "One of the key things we did was that we were actually collecting the genome of each of the three species, so that we could compare their genome with that of the wild population, which would be really useful," said Peltier.

As the genome of the common spider Mygalena was analysed and compiled over the course of their study, scientists discovered that there were several hundred potential copies of the spider silk protein, Myoglobin, on each chromosome.

Some of these genes make silk in tiny pore spaces in the body, which they need to use during construction, but more than half — more than 80 percent — of the time, they are dormant. The silk is particularly important because it is important for making the fine details of our bodies, such as our skin, hair, eyelashes, eyebrows and teeth.

The finding means that the spider species that were found able to learn some of these skills will be in good company: there are many different silk spider species found around the world and it's very easy to find one that can help us learn new types of silk.

"We are certainly going to need to start learning a lot more about the spiders that are found in our field and perhaps find ways of giving them more assistance in the field," said Peltier, adding that researchers might even try to help our own species when we've already done something similar. Wyong council meeting uproar over thomson's appointment

After the council approved the appointment of Mr Zhang as the next Hong Kong chief executive officer in February 2016, Hong Kong's chief executive then made a public request to the Hong Kong government to have him appointed as chief executive of Hong Kong under Article IV of the Chinese constitution, according to documents seen by Reuters.

In March the Chief Executive asked Hong Kong's chief executive council to accept the Hong Kong government's decision on appointing the man whose predecessor, Leung Chun-ying, had previously been chosen to succeed him.

In March Mr Zhang, the son of an electrician, was named chief executive of Hong Kong after Leung Chun-ying was disqualified for failing to turn in his electoral registration certificate and lose a bid to become a party chairman.

China's state-owned media frequently described Hong Kong's Chief Executive as the "only candidate for chief executive officer of the island".

Mr Zhang himself has been described by a spokesman for Mr Leung as a pro-Beijing candidate, a view shared by those who met him on Wednesday as well.

On Tuesday, the Hong Kong government made Mr Zhang the second person appointed to Hong Kong's executive board - the first being Hong Kong businessman Charles Ng, who was nominated to the post two days earlier.

It gave him until January, 2018, to make a decision.
