Police credit hard work for 'remarkable' drop in alcohol as a key factor

The impact has been dramatic. While alcohol consumption continues to fall, the proportion of people aged 12 and over drinking increased by 3.3 per cent between 2014/15 to 2015/16. The majority of this increase was in the last two years of 2014/15 to 2015/16, and in those aged 16 to 18, the increase was even greater by 4.9 per cent. Overall, the proportion of alcohol users living below the poverty line rose by 8.2 per cent between 2014/15 to 2015/16. This is a huge achievement, which shows the strong impact that hard work has on reducing alcohol consumption.

Since 2003, there has been a 50 per cent drop in alcohol-related deaths in England and Wales and a 45 per cent increase in alcohol-related injury mortality. This is a remarkable result for a country which has a high alcohol consumption rate and a small proportion of its people regularly drink. This year's data is another significant milestone and indicates the need for all levels of government to lead by example and reduce alcohol spending and public health costs.

The Government will continue to work with our partners, businesses and community groups to ensure that a fairer, more sustainable and more just society is for all and supports efforts to deliver a more level playing field for all as a whole.

Speculation grows that bracks will head automotive showrooms from China, but this is the first sign of an expansion. Ford was rumored to be working on an electric vehicle after the automaker announced an electric hatchback in 2012.

"If you're a brand like that, you're a brand where we're very familiar with how we're positioned and where we're heading," Ford executive VP and chairman of the Global Brand Group J.M. Schaeffer said. "As a brand with that DNA, we were eager to take advantage of any opportunity that was around our door."

Ford is not the only automaker that's exploring electric vehicles. Nissan announced last year it is introducing an electric version of the Leaf, but the only production car that will compete against the Leaf is an all-electric model at the end of the year. Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk told The New York Times on Monday that the company is developing an all-electric Model S. Nissan has made electric vehicles a priority since its last models hit the market.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is looking into whether automakers like Tesla are able to sell their products with more than one-third electric batteries, a legal standard that gives Tesla, General Motors and other automakers much more freedom to develop and market electric vehicles than those with batteries only the largest automakers will use.

"We've got some exciting competition out there," Schaeffer said. "We're pleased with what the public understands, and we're really happy that the companies that are developing the models are going to be doing it on a sustainable basis."

"I would think the consumer would like to know that there are options when you decide to go in that are comparable in many ways," he continued. "That's very exciting for us."

Automakers have been in talks about selling their electric vehicles at their showrooms since 2013, when Ford announced plans to bring a Ford Fusion sedan to dealerships by 2020 and Tesla said a model would go on sale in 2017.
